Powering Institutional Research Using R

This half day pre-conference workshop will provide an introduction to using the free, open-source software R to move IR projects forward. We will begin with the basics – attendees need no prior experience with R but will leave with an understanding of how to use R in their day-to-day work. IR specific projects will be used to illustrate how R and associated open-source software can make data cleaning, analysis, and reports faster, replicable, and more fun!

Timeline/Outline:

  • Noon: Check-in opens
  • 12:30: Software set-up and overview
  • 1:30: Importing and cleaning data
  • 2:30: Break (intermediate users are welcome to join late)
  • 3:00: Statistical analyses & data visualizations
  • 4:00: Building parameterized reports
  • 4:30: Collaborating on code and Q&A

Workshop Presenters:

Thomas Jay Benjamin is the Director for Institutional Research at Lorain County Community College. Thomas began using R following a workshop at the Spring 2019 OAIRP conference and has used it to assist with IPEDS, benchmarking, evaluation, and parameterized reporting (which he presented at the Spring 2023 OAIRP virtual conference). Most recently Thomas hosted an intern from LCCC’s Data Analytics program who learned R during his experience.

Lynzee Murray serves as an analyst within the Office of Institutional Effectiveness at Columbus State Community College. Her introduction to R and RStudio occurred during her master's program in Data Analytics at Bowling Green State University. During her tenure at Columbus State, Lynzee has utilized R for crafting data visualizations, conducting text analysis, and constructing comparison groups through propensity score matching.
